UNIV 101 Instructors

UNIV 101 instructors play a pivotal role in the first-year experience by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for students. They serve as a teacher, an advocate, an encourager, a tour guide, and a resource to students.

Eligibility and Requirements

•Must be a full-time non-exempt employee at KU (required so overload compensation can be provided)
•Master’s Degree completed by August 2024 (HLC requirement)
•Must have supervisor approval
•Available to teach the entire semester
•Experience working with a diverse group of college students
•Knowledgeable about campus resources, activities, and opportunities
•Experience teaching in a classroom or online course (preferred requirement)
UNIV 101 students present their project at the First-Year Student showcase.

Instructor Responsibilities

•Teaching or co-teaching a 2-credit hour section of UNIV 101 (course meets twice-per-week for 50 minutes)
•Leading discussion on academic skills, campus resources, experiential learning, and the transition to college
•Consulting with students outside of regular classroom hours during regularly scheduled office hours or upon request
•Following the curriculum as designed and completing required assessment activities (e.g. student and instructor surveys)
•Using UNIV 101 Canvas shell and publishing Canvas site two weeks prior to the start of class
•Evaluating, grading, and providing feedback on assignments
•Attending instructor development sessions prior to Fall semester [first week of August] and 3-4 periodic instructor development sessions during the semester
•Communicating with First-Year Course Coordinator with requests to modify the course schedule

Time Commitment

•Instructors will teach two 50-minute classes per week for an entire semester
•Typically, instructors spend 3 hours preparing and grading outside of class
•Instructors attend one 3-hour training prior to the start of the semester and 3-4 one hour trainings during the semester.
