UNIV 101 Application for New Section

University 101 helps students navigate the university, make an academic and personal wellness plan, engage in work that affirms student identities and builds campus communities, and develop skills to be successful at KU. While we offer general sections of UNIV 101 for both freshmen and transfer students, we often collaborate with campus partners to create sections that serve particular campus populations. For instance, we have sections specifically for students in the Options and Hixson Scholar programs. If you would like to establish a new section for a particular population of students, please submit this application.

All UNIV 101 sections must meet course learning outcomes and include StrengthsFinder, the KU Common Book, and all common presentations and assignments as designated by the UNIV 101 Work Group. Sections are also subject to UNIV policies including those governing academic integrity, attendance, and grading. In addition, all instructors are required to attend course development sessions.

Before beginning the application process, applicants should have:

  • Dean/Vice Provost approval to propose course (form can be found here)
  • the names of (proposed) instructor(s) *instructors of record must have a master’s degree
  • clear understanding of course learning outcomes/common elements and how the course will meet these
  • and assessment plan

The University 101 Work Group will review applications and forward recommendations to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Applicants will receive notification of the status of their application in 2-4 weeks after submission. All questions concerning the application should be forwarded to Kate Nygren, Assistant Director for Academic Programs, Office of First-Year Experience at knygren@ku.edu.

I verify that I have read all of the information above and would like to submit an application for a new section of UNIV 101.
