Biography

Meet your instructor....

What’s your pro-tip for success at KU?

My pro tip for success at KU is to actively build your community. Go to office hours early, even if you do not have questions, because building relationships with professors makes a big difference. Get involved in campus activities or organizations to feel connected, and do not be afraid to ask for help. Advisors, tutors, and support centers are there to support you. It is also important to develop strong time management habits by using a planner so you can stay on top of your classes while balancing academics and self-care. Stay curious, stay open, and be kind to yourself.

If you had an intro song that played when you walked into the classroom, what would it be?

The theme song of "My Neighbor Totoro"

Do you have photos or mementos in your office that have a special story?

My dog, Ollie's picture is on my office door to welcome you.

What was the specific moment or book that made you realize, "I want to study this forever"?

I do not remember a single moment or book that made me think, “This is what I want to study forever.” Almost everything I studied sparked my curiosity, which made it hard to choose one core subject. What guided me was the desire to contribute to a better world through my work. I primarily teach the Japanese language, and I believe learning a language within its cultural context can broaden students’ perspectives and help build a more thoughtful society. I am also deeply involved in music, which reminds me that learning is an endless journey, since there is no such thing as a perfect performance.
